Virtual Worlds
Navigation
The navigation through the Virtual Universe software and its components is very easy. All components (like the
Virtual Worlds component) are integrated seamless. Only by changing into an other world
you may enter an other part of the software.
After a successful login you are transported into the entrance world, the center of
the Virtual Universe. This world is a (little bit special) Virtual Worlds component.
To leave this world, you have to use the "Navigation" tab pane on the left side of the main window.
Universe Overview
On the upper half of this tab pane the Universe Overview can be found. Here it is possible to navigate trough all
existing worlds. They are displayed in a tree which tree is organized hierarchically:
- Center of the Universe (this is an exclusive root node and exists only once)
- Galaxies
- Solar systems
- Planets (= worlds of the different component types)
If you single click a node or navigate through it using the cursor keys different information about it are displayed
in the lower part of the "Navigation" tab pane. So you can see a short description of the selected node here and
information about restrictions. Some worlds have restricted access depending on the age of the user. If you are not
at least as old as the defined minimum age you will not be able to enter such a galaxy / solar system / planet.
To visit a planet, simply double click on it. You will be transported to the defined entrance-area of the planet
immediately.
Functions in Universe Overview
When you right-click into the "Navigation" tab pane when it is on top of all tab panes a context or popup menu appears.
This menu offers the following functions which require owner privileges. Without them they are not useable and disabled.
Additional a node the user has the owner privilege for has to be selected because all functions of this popup menu
work related to a node only:
- "New child node" - adds a new node below the selected one;
if you have selected the Center of the Universe or a galaxy a window appears where only the name for the
new child node has to be entered;
if you have selected a solar system a window appears where you have to enter the name of the planet you want to create
and where you can change the suggested key; please note: this key is used for the world server authentification and
should be as sure as possible (that means: at least 10 characters long, should be no meaningful term and should
consist of numbers, small and capital letters);
please do also note: galaxies and solar systems appear instantly because they do not require an active element,
planets do not; they require a configured and running world server which contacts the universe server successfully
- "Modify this node" - allowes modifying the properties of the selected node as they were defined when it was created
as a "New child node"
- "Stop this node" - possible only for planets, this function shuts down the world server
- "Edit this nodes rights" - opens a window where privileges can be set for this node; here you can enter the names of
users which shall have owner, operator, building and/or enter privileges or you can select if public building and/or
public access is allowed;
Please note: NEVER remove yourself from the owner list - afterwards you wouldn't have administrative access to your
own worlds!
Location-Bookmarks
The lower half of the "Navigation" tab pane offers the possibility to define own locations. Here only one bookmark is
predefined: the home-location. This is the position where the user starts after a successful login into the
Virtual Universe. To manage own bookmarks, the buttons below this locations-list have to be used:
- "Add" - adds a new location to the list. After clicking this button, the user is asked for a name this bookmark has
to be listed with. Recalling an existing bookmark is done like in the Universe Overview: the
desired location has to be double-clicked.
- "Home" - this is a special variant of the "Add"-button: here the home-location will be set to the actual position;
after the next login the user will start at this location
- "Remove" - removes the actually selected location-bookmark from the list; the only bookmark which can't be removed
is the first one, the "Home"-bookmark
- "?" - this button opens a small window which shows the coordinates of the actual position; these coordinates can
be copied out of this window and e.g. used for object commands.
