Virtual Worlds
World Administration
If you are the owner of a Virtual Worlds planet, you have access to different of its properties. Mainly you can
control and change the environment of your planet. To do that you have to select the menu "Administer" menu item
"World" in your main window. Then a window appears which offers following possibilities:
- Object Path URL - specifies the default 3D object path of your world; if you
build something in your world using Standard Objects and if you do not enter a
complete URL but only the object name, the browser tries to find the object using the object path defined here
- Welcome Message - the text defined here is displayed to everybody which enters the world
- Background Image URL - specifies the URL of a picture which is used as background image, e.g. a picture
of clouds would be useful here; related to this texture the following options can be set or selected:
- Skysphere - the image is mapped onto a spherical background object
- Skyplane - additionally to the skyspere a plane is generated to carry a texture for the sky or for clouds
- Skybox - here a skybox is used to display the background image; in this case a special image has to be used which
contains image-parts which fit to the six faces of this box. An example of how such a texture has to look like can be found
at http://www.3dchat.org/objects/textures/skybox_mountain01.jpg
- Tile Image - the background image is displayed repeatedly as tiles
- Scale Image - the image is scaled so that it fits completely to the background object
- Create Stars - if this option is selected a starry night is created; this option is available for the skysphere only
- Background Color - if no "Background Image URL" was specified, this color is used to fill the background
with
- Segment Ownership - if this checkbox is selected a special building mode is activated for this world
A segment is a piece of space with a width and depth of 20 m and a height of 200 m. If segment ownership is enabled
and someone puts an object into an empty segment, he becomes the owner of it. Afterwards nobody else is able to put
other objects into this segment. This mode should be used in worlds where many users or everybody is allowed to build
to give them the possibility to protect their buildings. Additionally in a world where segment ownership is enabled
the user can see a green, transparent frame (if he activates building mode) which marks the segment he just stands in.
- Ambient Light Color - specifies the color and brightness of the ambient light; this light has no source
and no direction, every object is influenced by it
- Directional Light - specifies the color and brightness of the directional light; this light has its source
in infinity and a defined direction, so depending on this direction objects are influenced only partially of it
- Directional Light Direction x, y and z - these three values define the vector used for the directional
lights direction; the usage of them is a little bit complicated and should be changed only by persons who are
familar with the concept of vectors
- Enable Fog - enables the rendering of fog in a world; if this checkbox is selected, following values are
used for the fog:
- Min Distance - the minimum distance at what the fog appears
- Max Distance - the maximum distance at what the fog appears, this value must be bigger than the value
for "Min Distance"
- Fog Color - the color of the fog
Please note: the fog is not a real volumetric fog. It is recommended not to use a background image together with
it. If the background color is identically to the fogs color instead, it looks much more like real fog.
